Steven Bradley, Winnipeg, Manitoba (September 3) Red River Co-op Speedway served up another great Thursday Night Thunder program under the lights at Manitoba’s premiere dirt oval. The weather was perfect for race fans – reaching 32 degrees at the drop of the green flag and only falling to 27 by the end of the night. The track was dry, fast and smooth – supplying racers multiple grooves from the very first heat, right through to the last feature. By the end of the night, each corner of the track resembled asphalt with the amount of rubber the surface had taken.
Ricky Weiss passed 7 cars in the WISSOTA Late Model feature – sweeping the night to earn his sixth RRCS feature of the season. Rick Delaine collected his second WISSOTA Modified win of the season in convincing fashion. Brodie Dobson swept the 23 car WISSOTA Midwest Modified field to return to victory lane after a couple seasons off. Peter Letkeman out-wheeled Shawn Teunis to earn his second WISSOTA Street Stock win of the year. And, Rene Poluyko ran high, wide and handsome to pick up his second RRCS feature win of the season in the Northern Super Truck division.
In WISSOTA Late Model action, Mike Martin and Paul Veert led 12 cars to the green flag. Martin quickly secured the point as Veert and Dustin Strand battled for second. On lap 3, Ricky Weiss joined the the top 3 as Strand moved into second and Weiss put Veert back to fourth. On lap 8, Weiss continued his march to the front after getting by Strand entering turn 1 for second position. On lap 9, Weiss ended Martin’s bid for his first win – completing a pass exiting turn 2 and moving to the point. Strand got by Martin on the next lap for second spot. The race ran wire to wire and Weiss easily collected the feature win – his sixth of the season at RRCS. Strand finished second and Mike Martin, Mike Balcaen and Bill Mooney rounded out the top 5.
Ricky Weiss swept the night earning a win in heat 1. Paul Veert also collected a win in heat 2.
In WISSOTA Modified racing, the only yellow flag of the night fell in the opening corner after Dustin Wahl slipped over turn 2. On a complete restart, Rick Delaine benefited from taking over Wahl’s front row starting spot and quickly secured the lead at the drop of the green flag. On lap 2, Scott Greer got by Kevin Sexton for third entering turn 3 – moving up 5 spots after starting back in eighth. Greer continued to charge forward after getting by second place Lee McRae on the next lap. On lap 6, Sexton overtook McRae for third in turn 1 with Ward Imrie hot on his tail. Delaine continued to dominate for the remainder of the race and picked up his second RRCS feature win of the season. Scott Greer finished in second and Ward Imrie, Danny Staff and Kevin Sexton rounded out the top 5.
Delaine swept Modified class, picking up a win in heat 1. Second place finisher Scott Greer also earned a win in heat 2.
In the WISSOTA Midwest Modified class, Brodie Dobson quickly moved from third to first on the opening lap before the first of many cautions came out on lap 3 for the spinning car of Mark Kohaykewych. Dobson held the point on the restart while Paul Veert and Jordan Wahl overtook Devon Gordon for second before Len Carlson drew a caution after spinning in turn 1. 4 more simultaneous cautions fell attempting to restart – the worse being a pileup involving the back half of the field on a single file restart attempt which was blamed on Rob Gordon. With zeros showing on the clock, the remaining 22 cars got set for a single file, green-white-checkered finish. Dobson held the lead but was under major pressure from Veert over the last 2 laps. On the last lap, Dobson slid high in turn 4 which opened the door for Veert on the bottom. Both racers drag raced out of the corner to the checkered flag. Dobson was able to keep his car wound up and crossed the finish line less than a car length ahead of Veert to collect his first feature win of the season. Jordan Wahl picked up 4 spots to finish third while Austin Hunter and Jason Somack rounded out the top 5.
Dobson swept the division picking up a win in heat 1. Jason Somack and Paul Veert each collected wins in their respective heats.
In the WISSOTA Street Stock series, Shawn Teunis picked up 4 spots on the opening lap to quickly take control of the lead until a caution fell on lap 2 for Bill Maruca after he spun in turn 2 and collected a few cars. On the restart, Teunis continued to lead while Shane Holden and Steve Boone battled hard for second. On lap 7, Peter Letkeman was charging to the front from a tenth place starting spot. Letkeman got by Holden in turn 4 to move into second position. On lap 8, Art Linert also got by Holden entering turn 3 to move into the top 3. A caution stacked the field up on lap 9 after Andrew Maxwell looped his car alone in turn 2. On the restart, Teunis continued to lead, but was under attack from Letkeman. After applying all kinds of pressure in each corner over the last half dozen laps, Letkeman finally completed a pass for the lead with 2 lap remaining in turn 3. Letkeman stayed on the point and collected his second RRCS feature win of the season. Shawn Teunis finished a respectable second while Art Linert, Shane Holden and Steve Boone rounded out the top 5.
Shane Holden and Art Linert each collected heat wins earlier in the night.
In the Northern Super Truck division, it took 2 attempts to get green flag racing in after Ryan Hambleton was credited with spinning himself and Rene Poluyko entering turn 1. Hambleton was sent to the back and Poluyko was given the pole starting position on the complete restart. Rod Fidler took command of the lead when the green flag flew and held it until Poluyko started applying pressure. On lap 7, Fidler and Poluyko swapped the lead three times in under a lap – with Poluyko emerging from that battle on the point. On lap 9 the race’s second cation was drawn when Dylan Baran spun in turn 1. On the restart, Poluko surrendered the lead to Jeff Remple for a lap, but was able to regain the point a lap later at the flag stand. Polyuko used the high line to keep his truck wound up and collected the checkered flag – his second of the season at RRCS. Jeff Remple picked up 3 spots to finish second while Eric Guyot, Rod Fidler and Tayvia Dorge earned top 5 finishes.
Rod Fidler won the class’s only heat earlier in the evening.
