Keith Cumming, Geenbush, Minnesota (July 5) After an inch and a half of rain on the 4th of July, the Greenbush Race Park track crew had plenty of work to do to get things ready for racing the next night. By the time the pit gates opened on raceday, everything was looking race ready. But then about 5:15PM rain hit the track with some small hail and put the nights events in doubt. But promoter Jaime Sovde decided a little rain wasn’t going to stop the NOSA Sprint show. So after an hour and 40 minute delay and a wet and tacky race surface, the evenings racing was ready to begin.
14 cars lined up for the green in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature, Shane Wahl and Patrick Sobolik lead the field to the green. Sobolik was the early leader with John Halvorson running second. The races only caution flew on lap 6 as the 21w of Andrew Maxwell came to a stop on the backstretch. For the next eight laps Halvorson chased Sobolik never getting more than a couple of cars lengths away. On the white flag lap Halvorson got under Sobolik in corner two and held on to pick up the checkered flag. Sobolik came home second and Thief River Falls driver Bill Yonke finished third. Shane Wahl and Mike Olson picked up the heat wins.
The WISSOTA Street Stock feature had 11 cars ready to take the green. The race was slowed by only two cautions, both by Nathan Heitala on the opening lap and again on lap six. Outside pole sitter Richard Jacobson was able to maintain his lead through the cautions but not without pressure from Art Linert and Ryan Johnson. Linert worked his way up to second after starting in the 5th position, when just before halfway Johnson got under him to take the spot. A few laps later Linert took back the second spot, as both Linert and Johnson continued to stay on the bumper of Jacobson. Coming to the checkered there was contact between Johnson and Linert in corner four sending Linert spinning to the infield. Jacobson got the win with Johnson finishing second and Heath Corneliusen in third. Linert and Shawn Teunis won their respective heats.
The NOSA Sprints made their first stop at the Greenbush Race Park as 19 cars checked into the pits. Young guns Jordan Adams and Trent Stengl led the 18 car field to the green, and Stengl jumped out to the early lead. Stengl had a big lead before the first caution flew 10 laps into the race. Two more cautions flew before they would get back to green flag racing until race leader Stengl brought out the next caution for a loose fitting that caused a small fire. A quick fix put Stengl back in the race but at the rear of the field. Jordan Adams inherited the lead and survived two more cautions before picking up his first NOSA feature win. 16 year old Jade Hastings finished second and Austin Pierce third. Chris Shirek, Casey Mack, and Chris Rantan picked up heat wins.
Lancaster, MN driver Mike Peterson got his second feature win in a row in the Pure Stocks as he passed Badger, MN driver Jerome Berger in corner four with two laps to go to get the win. Berger finished second and Stan Olson third. Peterson made it a clean sweep as he also won his heat and Berger won his heat.
Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN started on the outside of the front row in the Lightning Sprint feature and led the first half of the race before contact between he and a lapped car in corner four sent Truscinski into the water barriers and end his night of racing. Chris Sorin nherited the lead and was never really challenged to pick up the win. Alex Truscinski finished second and Eric Johnson third. Sorin also made it a clean sweep winning the only heat.
The 4 cylinders made their first appearance at the Race Park this year as Mike Demchuk, Dean Miljure, Jim Mulholland and Scott Perdonic made it four wide as they took the white flag. The race was back to the checkered flag and Scott Perdonic picked up the win, Mulholland finished second and Miljure third. Demchuck and Miljure got the heat wins.
Next up at the Race Park will be the Mid Season Championships for all classes plus the NLRA Late Models. Gates open at 4:30PM cutoff for the draw is at 6:00PM, hot laps at 6:30PM racing at 7:00PM sharp. After the races there will be a Free Will Burger feed in the pits put on by the Mike Peterson and Ed Lehrke racing teams. The feed is also sponsored by the Race Park and DRB Fabrication. The burger feed is to help raise money for the American Cancer Society & Harlie Corneliusen, daughter of Street car driver Heath Corneliusen. Everyone is welcome to attend.
