Donald McLeod, June 17 (Morden, MB) A late race pass by Scott Bintz of Jamestown, ND gave him the win over Brandon Rehill of St. Andrews, MB and Austin Hunter of Winnipeg, MB in the Darren Baker Memorial race at ALH Motor Speedway. The 20 lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature was the final race of the day at the track on Father’s Day, June 17 in front of a large and appreciative crowd.
It was the best race of the day and Darren Baker who was a popular volunteer at the track in the past, would have really liked the action on the track provided by the 18 starters.
There was some drama as Lance Schill of Langdon, ND who happens to be leading the points in the WISSOTA Polydome Dirt Track Series, brought out the first caution when he went off the top of turn three. He then went off the track and did not return for the restart. He maintained his lead in points with Hunter gaining a bit on him to hold second. Bintz was sixth in national standings after the race.
Rehill used his front row starting spot to take the lead that he held until a late race caution. Possibly using the same strategy that Jerome Guyot of Fannystelle, MB used in winning the WISSOTA Modified race that ran just before, Rehill was riding the rim of the track getting his right rear in the loose stuff at the top. The middle three grooves were dry and slick and you could hear the tires spinning as the cars rocketed down the front stretch.
Both Bintz and Hunter were doing the same but Rehill was able to open a bit of a gap between his 4B orange machine and the other two. But then on the final restart with just a few laps to go Rehill went just a bit too high in turn two and Bintz took advantage to get under him. Rehill came close to regaining the lead but Bintz now took his line away from him and held on for the win.
Bintz said he didn’t think he was going to get around Rehill but was in the right spot at the right time and pounced. The three deserve credit for running as clean as they did for the entire race while running so close together. In fact the whole field did a good job in the race.
Cody Wall of Plum Coulee, MB was fourth, Brandon Wieler of Winkler, MB fifth and Ted Doell of Carman, MB sixth. Hunter won heat 1 ahead of Eric Haugland of Lawton, ND and Derek Unrau of Roland, MB. Bintz won heat 2 with Rehill second and Cole Haugland of Brocket, ND third. Schill took the win in heat 3 ahead of Brenden Luschinski of Headingley, MB and Christopher Leek of Ste. Anne, MB.
