Dha McLeod Morden, MB (June 25) Austin Overwater of Winnipeg took the lead after two laps in the feature race at ALH Motor Speedway this past Sunday. If there were rear view mirrors in these cars he would have seen veteran Les McRae of Marquette closing in on him and eventually getting past. Then he would have seen Brian Kentner of Boissevain also closing in on him.
However on the last restart, with about five laps to go, Overwater gave McRae a tap on the back bumper to let him know he was there and then got under the 9 car through the one and two turns. He slid up a bit and McRae had to check up to avoid contact. That slowed McRae’s momentum and Kentner also got past him.
Kentner closed the gap down the backstretch on the final lap and went low through the third and fourth corners. He powered off the fourth corner and almost got along side at the flag. Overwater managed to just hold on for his first win of the season.
Danielle Korne of Morden started on the pole and held the lead through the first two laps. While Overwater and McRae fought for the lead in the early going, Kentner, Brian Bellew of Killarney and Nathan Klaassen of Morden were waging a nice battle for third spot a few car lengths back. Bellew finished fourth and Klaassen fifth behind McRae.
McRae who has two wins this season, managed to hold onto the points lead at 363 just two points ahead of Kentner who has one win. Overwater is third in points, Klaassen fourth and Korne fifth. Racing action will continue on July 9 after an off week this weekend.
