Marty Thomas, Swan River, Manitoba (January 18) Swan Valley Speedway near Swan River, MB will be celebrating 30 years of racing in 2015. The first race was held at a different track 2 miles east of Swan River. The club being new thought racing on sand would be great, until they raced on it. About that time a farmer was digging a dugout near where the track is now and found clay just below the surface. A Cat and scraper was brought in and a 1/4 mile, semi banked track was built.
In the early years, Super Stocks, Street Stocks and even Late Models came from The Pas, Flin Flon, Thompson and Wadena, SK – but sadly these tracks are now closed. About 10 years ago car counts dropped down to about 4 Street Stocks. A 4 Cylinder class was created and now car counts have increased to about 9 Street Stocks and 8 4 Cylinders with more cars coming from Yorkton and Tisdale, SK.
Along with racing, the track has a mudbog pit in the infield and holds 4 Cylinder demo derbys. Plans are in the works for a party after the August 1st race with BBQ and a band.
