Donald McLeod, Emo, ON (June 30) Cody Wall of Winkler has been driving well in WISSOTA Street Stocks this season. Earlier in the season he had said that he was trying to drive with more discipline and patience. At his home track of ALH Motor Speedway in Morden, he has been in position to finish in the top three on many occasions only to have some over aggressive driving cause a spin out putting him back in the pack. He has shown that he can run with his dad James, as well as Shawn Teunis and Shane Holden who have been the top three in this class over the past few seasons.
A few drivers from the ALH and Red River Co-op Speedway’s family of racers made the trip to Emo on June 30 and Wall won the Street Stock feature after winning his heat race. It was his first ever feature win and it was a popular one as he received well wishes from numerous drivers and many of his fans. Dad James was still quite excited when I talked to him the afternoon of July 1.
“He used patience and discipline and didn’t overdrive the car. He just did what was working. He drove a low line going into the corner slow, got it to turn and then went on the power. Most everyone else was running a higher line,” James said. He noted that Emo is a bit longer and doesn’t have as much banking as ALH and even though it is a slower track it is a bit tougher. “The banking at ALH allows you to go faster through the corners and makes it easier to drive there.”
While Cody had a great outing in Emo, James didn’t. Racing his WISSOTA Midwest Modified he had a DNF in the feature. “I got wrecked in both the heat and feature.” The Thursday before at Red River Coop Speedway, he wrecked his street stock. “I have parts coming and hope to have both cars back on the track soon.” Such is the life of a grass roots short track stock car dirt racer.
Cody finished ahead of Chris Shine of Devlin, ON and Jeff Wickstrom of International Falls, MN in his feature in which eight cars took part.
Ward Imrie of Winnipeg won the WISSOTA Modified feature while Jerome Guyot of Fannystelle, MB was third and brother Eric finished fifth. Gavin Paull of Fort Francis, ON was second with Steve Nordin of Stratton, ON fourth. Darian Boyce of Winnipeg, who won the modified feature a week earlier, had a DNF this time around. There were 15 cars in the feature.
In Midwest Modifieds Brody Strachan of Emo was the winner ahead of Jeff Davis of Devlin, ON and Chuck Lambert of Fort Francis. There were 19 cars in this feature with James Wall having to settle for the 19th spot.
There was a field of 17 in the NLRA WISSOTA Late Model feature. Mike Balcaen of Winnipeg finished third behind Brad Seng of Grand Forks, ND and Joey Pederson of East Grand Forks. Bill Mooney of Selkirk, MB was sixth with Dustin Strand of Grand Forks and Pat Doar of New Richmond, WI finishing ahead of him.
