Steven Bradley, Winnipeg, MB (August 22) Red River Co-op Speedway held their annual Amsoil Race of Champions qualifier tonight as all WISSOTA sanctioned classes looked to earn their invitations to the big race in Huron, SD.
It was a warm, humid night which played some tricks on the race surface. Turns 1 and 2 remained in shadow and tacky nearly the whole night, while turns 3 and 4 were in direct sunlight and dry as a bone. Racers had to decide which end of the track they wanted to set up for. With the season winding down as well as points and ROC invitations on the line, it all made for some fireworks on the track in a couple classes.
Andy Martens, Mike Martin, Ward Imrie and Troy Schill all used top 3 starting spots to race their way into the Amsoil Race of Champions with feature wins tonight.
In WISSOTA Super Stock action, Paul Veert led the single heat from the pole. On lap 3, Rod Fidler was moving up the ranks and passed Al Sedo low exiting turn 2 for second. Fidler was able to catch, but not pass the leader as Veert went on the win the heat. Fidler finished second ahead of Sedo in third.
The feature got off to a crazy start when Veert dove low under Sedo to make it 3 wide before the flag stand. Sedo hooked Veert’s rear, stayed on the gas and sent him spinning into Tabitha Wasylyk also collecting Kevin Groenheide. Sedo continued to stay on the gas and sent Veert spinning a second time before the end of the front straight away. Sedo was sent to the rear of the pack while Veert drove to the pits to address the damage. Wasylyk also drove to the pits and retired for the night.
On the restart, Mike Martin stayed on the point while Sedo and Veert continued to mix it up at the back of the pack. Sedo spun Veert once again exiting turn 4 to bring out a second caution. Officials sent Sedo to the pits and parked him for the night. After another quick caution for Devon Gordon spinning alone in turn 3 racing finally resumed.
Martin continued to lead as Rod Fidler and Scott Brown were swapping spots and paint over the next couple laps. Eventually, that battle ended when a caution came out for Devon Gordon for the second time as Gordon was then parked for the night.
With 5 laps remaining, Martin jumped out to lead while Fidler and Brown continued their battle for second. Brown entered turn 1 to the outside of Fidler as both drivers tried pinching each other exiting the turn. Fidler was sent spinning and another caution slowed the race. Under yellow, Fidler showed his displeasure and slammed into Brown high in turn 4. Officials quickly stepped in and sent Brown to the rear of the pack.
With no time left on the clock, the field got set for a green, white, checkered finish. Martin once again grabbed the lead with Fidler giving chase. Martin was untouchable and he drove to his fourth win this season at RRCS. Fidler finished second ahead of Kevin Penner in third.
