Steven Bradley, Winnipeg, Manitoba (July 17) The NLRA Late Model tour roared into Red River Co-op Speedway on Thursday night. The special event drew a respectable 17 car field from division drivers looking to collect points for the first time this month due to weather disruptions in their schedule.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks, Northern Super Trucks and Northern Lightning Sprints were added to the event giving race fans a full assortment of classes to enjoy. The track was tacky through the heats, but dried up for the features – creating plenty of room for 3 wide racing.
Brad Seng finally knocked Ricky Weiss off the podium in the WISSOTA Late Model series. Rick Hamel won for the first time this season in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified class. Jesse Pederson ended Shawn Teunis’s win streak in the WISSOTA Street Stock division and Roland Bernard returned to Victory Lane for the first time this year at in the Northern Lightning Sprint class.
In WISSOTA Late Model racing, Dustin Strand led every lap from the pole to win heat 1. Ricky Weiss passed Steffen Snare on the back stretch with 2 laps left to place second. In heat 2, Brad Seng beat Rick Fawcett of the front row and led every lap to take the checkers. Cole Schill crossed the line second ahead of Paul Veert in third. In heat 3, Mike Balcaen survived a late caution to beat Steve Anderson to the finish line. Rookie Mike Martin placed third.
In the feature, 17 cars got set to do battle for 25 laps. Brad Seng led the opening lap from the pole until a caution slowed race pace when Bill Mooney stalled high on the front stretch – nearly causing a disaster for the pack behind him.
On the restart, Seng once again opened a healthy lead with Mike Balcaen settling into second spot. On lap 7 another caution stacked the field up when Cole Schill spun on the back stretch.
When green flag racing resumed, Seng continued to lead with Dustin Strand and Ricky Weiss quickly getting by Balcaen. Weiss continued his journey to the front – passing Strand low exiting turn 4 and began to chase down the leader.
It wasn’t long before Seng found himself in lap traffic. However, the lead he had built was enough to close any openings between he and second place Wiess.
As laps wore down Weiss cut the straight-away gap in half, but it wasn’t enough for the undefeated driver. Seng earned the feature win about 5 car lengths ahead of Weiss. Dustin Strand ended his night in third.
This win adds to Seng’s WISSOTA points lead and ends the 5 race win streak Weiss was on at RRCS.
